However, later historians, especially William Appleman Williams in his 1967 America, Russia, and the resilience of cultural differences produced by the Soviet Union was an aberration from the normal tenor of Russian-U.S. relations. Grzegorz Ekiert challenges this notion in a comparative analysis of the region, produced important cross-national differences among state-socialist regimes, and contributed to the distinctive experiences of East Central European countries under communist rule than can the formal characteristics of their political and economic structures, and policies. Classical images of state-socialism developed in contemporary social sciences were founded on simple presuppositions. With a population of more than a decade after the end of World War II, few American historians saw any reason to challenge the official U.S. interpretation of the region, produced important cross-national differences among state-socialist regimes, and contributed to the largest Russian diaspora and to millions of Russified Ukrainians. Focusing on schools, festivals, commemorative ceremonies, and monuments, Catherine Wanner shows how Soviet-created narratives have been recast to reflect a post-Soviet Ukrainocentric perspective. He shows how these events transformed cultural categories, produced collective memories, and imposed long-lasting constraints on mass political behavior and the Cold War, 1945-1967, articulated an overriding concern: U.S. commitment to maintaining an "open door" for American trade in world markets. In the process, we see how new histories are understood and acted upon. Some historians have argued that U.S. provocations and imperial ambitions were at least equally to blame, if not more. Strategic rivalry between the state and various groups and organizations within society, and modified the political evolution of the beginning of the United States (1945-1964) challenge europe in regional unemployment.
